New Eaters

Eating Tampa would like to welcome its newest eater – Michael! Be sure and check out his Black Bean Soup recipe below.

I also finally got JB’s Garbanzo Bean Salad recipe back up. I had to fix some over-sized images on it.

Where Other People Eat

Kevin reviews the Fly Bar and Restaurant and gives it a thumbs up.

“It may have taken me a while to give Fly a chance, but I’m glad I did. Tampa has a void of original places that needs to be filled and Fly Bar and Restaurant succeeds. As I was, you may [...]

Slow Week for Eating

This last week the only eating out we did was lunch at Pho Quyen. And, it seems like I’ve been working late every night, so the only food I’ve been preparing are simple things like salads, or rice and beans, so I haven’t tried out any new recipes.

Pho Quyen is a decent Vietnamese restaurant near [...]

New World Brewery

I suspect there are other bars in Tampa, but I haven’t had any desire to look for them since I stumbled into New World Brewery. New World has everything I’m looking for in a bar, delicious beer (I’ve been partial to the Belhaven lately, but they have a wide assortment of Belgians, and microbrews), a [...]

Chowhound Tampa

The Chowhound Tampa page is mostly moribund, but if you’re new to Tampa you might spend an idle moment browsing last February’s conversation.

There’s also an interesting conversation about the best Mexican food in Tampa.

As far as Mexican goes, I eat a Taconazo a lot because it’s close, but my favorite so far has been Maya’s.

Some [...]

Return to Mel’s

As I mentioned in a previous post I want to like Mel’s Hot Dogs I just wasn’t impressed with my first visit. In the comments Joel prompted me to try one of their specialty dogs, so yesterday afternoon I did just that.

This time I tried the Mighty Mel. This is a much more satisfactory dog [...]

The Cause of, and Solution to, All Life’s Problems

Jay Pinkerton provides some tips on getting a good night’s sleep.

For some, sleep comes easily. However, for the rest of us going to bed can be a long, unnecessarily drawn-out affair. Luckily, years of field research on my part have led to the discovery of a sure-fire insomnia cure, which I intend to share with [...]

Cherry Tomato and Olive Relish

Last night I made this tomato and olive relish to serve as a side dish with my baked tilapia. I found it while looking for a tomato and avocado relish, which I still haven’t found.

Laura Reiley

I see that I forgot to congratulate Laura Reiley on her new position as the St. Petersburg food critic. Congratulations Laura!

Her current column, American idyll, covers a portion of the Florida panhandle (perhaps this appears in the Travel section?).

Her last Tampa-area food column was a review of Pollo Tropical, and BJ’s.

But, I have a question. [...]

Kevin Lacassin, who once hosted NOLAFoodie, and TampaBayEats, has decided to start blogging about “food, drinks, restaurants, taverns, festivals and feasts” over at Sticks of Fire.

Excellent! I’m looking forward to Kevin’s ruminations about Tampa food.

Return of Stephanno’s

Most of you already know this, and those that don’t never knew it was missing.

Seminole Heights pizza-lovers hit a gloomy spot a few weeks ago when Stephanno’s pizza simply stopped opening. A message on their machine said they would be re-opening soon. It turns out that owner Paul Stephenson was enjoying such success with his [...]

Bon Voyage, Florida Food Hound

Florida Food Hound, a Tampa-area food blogger, is moving up to Gainesville later this summer. That’s too bad. In many ways FFH was a model food/eating/restaurant blog. Good luck, Matt!

The blog will remain, but will focus on Gainesville-area restaurants rather than Tampa.

Meta Update

First, I want to thank JoLT for helping out with this blog and wish best of luck in his new life in Flagstaff. Thanks Jon! In appreciation for his work here I’ve turned him into Eating Tampa’s iconic image. That’s him at the top of the right-hand column enjoying some noodles.

Second, I’ve decided to redesign [...]

Merino’s Deli in Seminole Heights

I finally made it over to Merino’s Deli in Seminole Heights. Merino’s is a great addition to the Seminole Heights neighborhood. Seating inside is a little cramped, but there’s more seating outside.

I had a club on wheat, chips, a pickle, and a Barq’s root beer for just over $10. It was great. Non-specialty sandwiches cost [...]
