Flashpoint, a blog hosted on ABC Action News, points to this post by Eat My Tampa’s Brian Ries – Fined Dining.
Brian’s post is about the website gototell.com, which “lists restaurants that have been fined by the inspectors of the Florida Department of Hotels and Restaurants.”
Browsing through the list of worst offenders, most seem to be [...]
A gift for the foodie, or professional chef in your life. Or maybe just someone who likes nifty design.
Description from the site -
“This little guy is so useful! And cute! This dinner fork stands all by itself. Most forks have been left in an unpolished & distressed state. I like it that way. You could [...]

Tampa I Am eats dinner at Cellini’s.
E. B. bakes a pair of plum pies, and gives us mouth-watering pictures and a recipe.

Los Hermanos sits at the corner of Kirby and Florida. I’ve been driving by it for months and finally decided to stop in for lunch.
It is an odd sort of restaurant. It is Dominican fare, rather than the Tex-Mex I was hoping for, and they had no menu. They also didn’t seem to have a [...]
(Update – as of August 14, 2009, both seem to be closed.)
In a recent issue of Creative Loafing Brian Ries reports that Taqueria Quetzlcoatl was bought by Tommy Ortiz and is now Taqueria Cantina.
Ries writes -
“Husband and wife team Juan and Maya Vargas (formerly of Café Anna) now run the Cantina kitchen and have changed [...]
Jaden offers some tips on grilling corn, and explains how to make Lime Cilantro Wasabi Butter.
Wasabi makes everything better.
From the department of unfortunate eatery, Slashfood posts this dubious Velveeta concoction. It begins…
Blend the pecans, pickle relish, mayonnaise, Worcestershire sauce and seasonings to taste.
…and includes a half pound of Velveeta. Yum!
I ate at Three Coins twice this last week to check it out. It’s not terribly great. On my first visit I had a burger, which came thoroughly cooked, and slathered with mayo. My second meal was a breakfast burrito, which has the sort of flaky tortilla generally found in your low-end frozen burritos.
Regardless, I [...]
Tommy in Old Seminole Heights alerts us that Mel of Mel Hot Dogs is looking to sell.
(Another update – Jalapeno’s has closed.)
Those keeping score at home (and really, why wouldn’t you be) know that I believe Tex-Mex to be the ultimate expression of food. I could dine on a diet of bean and tortilla variations for the rest of my life and never tire of it. That said, there’s plenty of [...]
Savvy Jack’s reminds me of a European bed and breakfast, and I’m looking forward to going back more for the cozy decor than the food.
Savvy Jack’s is located in a strip shopping mall (surprise!) in Temple Terrace, on 56th just south of Fowler. They promote themselves as “southern gourmet,” but I haven’t eaten there [...]
Brian Ries at Eat My Florida has a few words on eating local.
He has an even longer piece here, from June of last year.

Laura Reiley has more to say about eating local.
Someone was listening! A few weeks ago I was grumbling about how difficult St. Pete’s makes it to link to their new food critic. Well, my grumbles have been heard. Laura Reiley now has her own food blog Mouth of Tampa Bay: A Restaurant Blog. So far she’s posted a series on Eating Personalities, and [...]
(I pinched this image from Matt at Florida Food Hound)
I’m not sure what you’ve heard about Laughing Cat, but if you’ve heard that it’s awesomely delicious, you’ve heard right.
JB and I went there a few weeks ago for our anniversary dinner. When I asked the waiter what was good he mentioned a pork chop dish [...]
Rick F. at Seminole Heights informs us that Three Coins is under new management, is now open 24 hours, and also now takes debit/credit cards. All good news. Commenter Torgo adds –
“Place is delicious — old school and new style. Love the food, staff and the place in general.”
Before the new management I found [...]
Just because I’ve been neglecting my posts doesn’t mean I’ve stopped eating Tampa. Someday perhaps I’ll get on a regular posting schedule!
With a staff ostensibly headed by a non-owner who wears a Dead Kennedys T with JFK’s brains screen printed on the front and a Muffaletta–essentially, a Cuban sandwhich with olive spread–the likes of which I have not found in Tampa, Papa Joe’s packs a delicious punch (see other reviews here).
Though not “fast,” it certainly makes [...]
