One of the things that has surprised me during this little excursion into the world of cocktails is the variation in recipes. I thought that the recipe for something as simple as a Gimlet would be pretty uniform. It’s not.
My Schumann’s describes it as 2 oz. gin mixed with 1 3/4 Rose’s lime juice. Coctaildb gives one recipe that calls for 1 oz. lime juice with 2 oz. gin, and another that requires a green cherry as a garnish. Wikipedia gives four different recipes, a 1:1 ration, a 4:1 ratio, a 3:1 ratio, and one that uses simple syrup and freshly squeezed lime juice rather than Rose’s. Raymond Chandler’s recipe is the 1:1 ratio.
Sorting through all of this I decided on a 3:1 ratio (3 parts gin to 1 part Rose’s lime) as suggested by the New New York Bartender’s Guide by Sally Ann Berk and garnished with a wedge of lime. It has a sweet start and a strong gin finish.
