Lukas at WFMU’s Beware the Blog located this spectacular collection of Chicha music, psychedelic cumbias. Get it while the getting is good. Here’s a link to Amor Indio for your sampling pleasure.

Wow, while I know that all local newspapers are having financial trouble, I didn’t realize how close Creative Loafing was to an epic fail. Wayne Garcia points to the coverage about the bankruptcy filing. While bankruptcy CAN result in successful restructuring, it’s obviously not a good sign. My best wishes to every one at CL, [...] JD Doyle at Queer Music Heritage has located and made available an extraordinary collection of gay-themed novelty songs from the early and mid 1960s. Ahhh, the internet. What library would collect material like this? By digitizing these songs Doyle has helped keep a relatively unknown portion of American history available. Check out his tribute page [...] I occasionally receive press releases. Most I ignore, but with a few I have posted snippets and links to the pertinent sites. I’m posting this whole release from EVOS just because I like them, and I like supporting them. (Now if they’d only take out an ad!) *** EVOS Promotes “Get Smart About Antibiotics Week” Customers to get [...] The end of the month is rapidly approaching, which means that the polls will soon be closed on Eating Tampa’s Best of Tampa Reader’s Poll. Vote! Vote! Vote! (And THANKS to all those who have already voted). You can vote in the comments, or send me an email at eatingtampa AT gmail.com I’m pasting the original post [...] Jim Webster, local foodie, Trib St. Pete Times writer, and Gastroblogger needs your votes. He’s a quarterfinalist in Mario Batali’s “Ultimate Grilling Challenge.” Help make sure Tampa is represented in Texas during the final cookoff. From Laura Reiley - “You can watch his video here, but there have been some technical difficulties with the online voting process. [...] One of my pet peeves is people who don’t return their grocery carts, but instead abandon them on the edges of the parking lot and wedged between parked cars. It’s not just that you could use the extra walking (and you could) it’s that this sort of behavior will end badly. Eventually we’ll have to pay [...] HA! I kid the homeless. But, seriously, if they wanted any help from the government they should have hired a lobbying firm to get Phil Gramm (one of McCain’s economic advisors) to pass a bill saying that they could spend their money as wrecklessly and irresponsibly as they wanted and the government would give them [...] Congratulations to Tommy Duncan at Sticks of Fire for his fourth straight First Place finish in Creative Loafing’s Best Local Blog. I’m a huge fan of SoF and think that despite there being some wonderful local blogs, Tommy’s victory is a no-brainer. Congratulations are also due to LitBrit, Creative Loafing’s staff pick for best local blog. [...] Here’s some bipartisanship I can get behind. Justice Sandra Day O’Connor and Congressman Lee Hamilton penned this op-ed piece for the Christian Science Monitor about the importance of civic education. Of course, there’s no reason Florida (or Hillsborough County, or Tampa, or YOU!) needs to wait for the federal government to do something about it. [...] I want to thank council member Charlie Miranda, code enforcement, and whoever is responsible for building the Tampa.gov website. The website is relatively easy to use and has a pretty smart design (though there’s still room for improvement!) and all have promptly responded. Thanks to everyone for their prompt and courteous response. Unfortunately, the end result [...] Bruce Sterling has a new science fictional monologue in Rudy Rucker’s latest issue of Flurb. When I think about recreating Tampa this is what I’m thinking about. Vision. We need to be looking ahead. Tampa needs to start now to be among the leaders in cloud computing in a quarter century. Computer Entertainment Thirty-Five Years From [...] I’m sure we’re not the only block to suffer from the eyesore of abandoned homes. As I walk around the neighborhood there are several obviously abandoned homes with overgrown lots. One particular eyesore is just down the street from me. After contacting Bank of America, and the Realtor on the sign out front, I contacted Code [...] Vote Vote Vote! We’re halfway through the month and I needs lots more votes. Don’t be overwhelmed by the number of choices. You aren’t expected to vote in every category. AND, if there’s a category you don’t see, Invent It! Either vote in the comments here, or send me an email at patadave AT gmail.com. |
