The Ybor City Stogie sends along this link about a boneheaded bigot Florida teacher. Since I’m trying to keep the presidential politics to a minimum that’s all I’ll say.
Considering this man’s appalling behavior it may sound counter-intuitive when I say Florida teachers need a HUGE raise. But what we need to create is a world where smart and competent people are vying for the jobs that people like this get by default. I know only a few K-12 teachers, and they love teaching their students. But every teacher I know has considered moving on to a more lucrative career.

Totally! I taught for 3 years (and may again in the future) but teaching requires a lot. Not only do you have to teach, you have to discipline, mentor, and parent the children. Then you have to deal with parents before and after school. Then you have to create lesson plans and grade papers on your own time. At my old school I was also responsible for cleaning the bathroom and garbage duty…all that for 30 K a year. I didn’t go to college to be a teacher, but fell into it through a grad-level training program when I couldn’t do anything with my art degree. But teaching is a very rewarding job when you create relationships with the students and see how you affect their lives.
