Abbie is a timid dog. She’s fine around other dogs, but shy and fearful of people.
For years we had trouble leaving her alone. She became anxious and chewed lots of stuff. So, we crated her. That worked. She really liked her crate, and would hang out inside it even when we were home and the [...]

Publicly Owned Broadband
Tampa should be considering building community financed fiber optic networks. Cities that adopt broadband and wifi as public utilities will have an advantage in the 21st century. There is sufficient evidence at this point to show that electronic networks create social networks. The City of Tampa could help bring its citizens together by pursuing community [...]
Community Funded Reporting
Josh Marshall of Talking Points Memo (political commentary from the left) found a way to make a living from blogging. Not only does he make a living, but he now runs a small business, paying the salary of about a dozen blogger/reporter/analysts. Here he offers some advice on fund-raising.
Music Monday
MGMT is the hipster band du jour, making it onto all the current movie soundtracks, like Spoon last year, or the Shins the year before. Sort of a blend between Flaming Lips and Papas Fritas, MGMT churns out a pleasant concoction of psychedelic-lite to a beat you can dance to.
Whoops! Their official YouTube page has [...]
Roubini’s Fix
I’m not very economically minded, so the recent financial crises have been so much background gibberish. My mortgage is/was held by Wachovia, but it’s not clear that their purchase by CitiGroup or Wells Fargo will have much direct impact on me (other than I’ll have a different annoying phone tree to work my way through [...]
The Youth Is Starting to Change
I should probably save this for Music Monday, but what the hell. This is JB’s new favorite video. She’s been playing it all day long.

Happy Surveillance Day!
Some folks in Europe have designated today, October 11, as a “Worldwide Action Day” against surveillance. Since Americans are largely indifferent to anything European (metric system anyone?) it’s not something you’ll see much of in the local news.
Nonetheless, an international day to think about issues of surveillance is a good idea. If you leave your [...]
Vote No on 2
Even if you oppose same-sex marriage you should vote no on Florida amendment 2. It is such a poorly worded law that it will affect everyone in a non-traditional marriage, including all common-law marriages, and all long-term couples just “living together.”
The amendment would add these words to the Florida constitution -
“Inasmuch as marriage is the [...]
More Voting Shenanigans
An NYT investigation reveals some voter problems. The reporter’s conclusion is that it’s not the result of dirty politics, but confusion in complying with the Help America Vote Act. Nonetheless, it will probably affect the Democratic party more than the Republican party.
“The screening or trimming of voter registration lists in the six states — Colorado, [...]
Florida Voting Problems
Wired published this story a month ago, but I just saw it last night.
“Palm Beach County, Florida, is in the news again for another election mishap. This time the culprit isn’t the county’s infamous butterfly ballot that made headlines in the 2000 presidential race. Instead, the problem is ballots used with the county’s new $5.5 [...]
