Between 2002 and 2006 nothing was more un-American than threatening a filibuster. The Republican mantra was “the president deserves an up-or-down vote” when it comes to appointments, and threatening to block legislation was as good as siding with the terrorists.
In the past six weeks Republicans Jeff Sessions, Richard Shelby, Mike Crapo, Jim Risch, Chuck Grassley, Sam Brownback, Jim Bunning, Mitch McConnell, David Vitter, Roger Wicker, Kit Bond, John Ensign, Richard Burr, Tom Coburn, Jim Inhofe, Jim DeMint, and John Cornyn voted to filibuster the Nomination of Christopher Hill to be Ambassador to Iraq.
Republicans Jeff Sessions, Richard Shelby, Jon Kyl, Mike Crapo, Jim Risch, Sam Brownback, Pat Roberts, Jim Bunning, Mitch McConnell, John Ensign, Tom Coburn, Jim Inhofe, Jim DeMint, and John Thune voted to filibuster the GIVE Act (aka the Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act).
Republicans AL Jeff Sessions, Richard Shelby, John McCain, Johnny Isakson, Chuck Grassley, Sam Brownback, Pat Roberts, Jim Bunning, Mitch McConnell, John Ensign, Judd Gregg, Richard Burr, Tom Coburn, Jim Inhofe, Jim DeMint, Lindsey Graham, John Thune, Lamar Alexander, Bob Corker, John Cornyn, and Kay Hutchison voted to filibuster the Omnibus Public Land Management Act of 2009.
There are six more of these lists, but you get the idea. Republicans have voted for filibuster nine times (so far) this Congress.
When asked why the public perceived the Republicans as being obstructionists, Eric Cantor not, you know, their actual strategy of obstruction.
