Somalia: Libertarian Paradise

Ahhh, a world without a government. As Libertarian Ted Nugent says, “We don’t want the government to do ANYTHING for us.” This is a clip of what Libertarian paradise looks like.

You know what would be awesome? If Libertarians moved to Somalia!

(Note to Libertarians: I really like the part of Libertarianism that endorses liberty, but we already a political philosophy that champions that, it’s called Liberalism. The part about Libertarianism that’s bonkers is the belief in Free Market (which doesn’t exist outside of places like Somalia) and the rational economic actor (see, for example, Dan Ariely’s book Predictably Irrational.)

    Dave-

this video short, as well as your post, is wrong on so many levels that it’s hard to count. And it is beyond farcical for you to claim that modern day “Liberalism” that is championed by “Progressives” has anything to do with authentic Liberty. What it does have to do with is increased coercion, increased taxation, mandatory government programs that squeeze out private sector alternatives (social security and the forthcoming attempt to fully socialize medicine). So please, let’s have some truth in advertising- I dont care if you support mandatory government programs that rely on increased taxes from an array of sources- just don’t label your agenda as one that has anything to do with “liberty”. It is socialism- you should embrace the title of what you support.

  • TTG – I’m happy to learn. I’ve even been known to change my mind when presented with rational, cogent arguments supported by facts and evidence.

My first question – what do you mean by “authentic liberty?”

If we’re going to go any further, perhaps we should establish some definitions.

  • As a moderator at http://www.facebook.com/10thAmendment I would be the first to argue that the GOP is not safe from critics. Issues covered include gay marriage and the war on drugs. This is not a right/left issue it is a centralized jurisdiction vs. a dispersed jurisdiction question.

  • CL – I think that's right, and I think there are a lot of important debates to have about federal/state governance. I'm actually pretty sympathetic to 10th amendment arguments. Unfortunately, I don't hear many principled arguments about the role the 10th amendment should take. Some folks simply use it to advocate for their pet positions, rather than making a principled argument for its use.
