This is the movie I’ve been waiting for! This Sunday (August 2, 2009) at 3pm the Tampa Theatre will show The Creature from the Black Lagoon (1954). In 3D!
“A classic of the science fiction/horror genre, Creature From The Black Lagoon follows a group of scientists who come across the fossilized hand of a human fish [...]
Citing “pressure from the White House” (though specifically not Barack Obama) Rep. Alcee Hastings withdraws an amendment weakening DADT.
“Rep. Alcee Hastings (D-FL) said yesterday that he withdrew an amendment to a defense appropriations bill that would have weakened the military’s ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ policy because of ‘pressure’ from the White House and some ‘congressional [...]
Florida state Senator Carey Baker and Florida state Rep. Scott Plakon want to introduce a bill that allows people to opt out of any national health care system that might be put into place.
From the Orlando Sentinel -
“HJR 37 says any “law or rule shall not compel, directly or indirectly, any person, employer, or health [...]
UPDATE – I was wrong and Camille Paglia was right. See my update here.
“But simple questions about the certificate were never resolved to my satisfaction. Thanks to their own blathering, fanatical overkill, of course, the right-wing challenges to the birth certificate never gained traction. But Obama could have ended the entire matter months ago by [...]
Researchers discover what Guinness drinkers have known all along. Guinness is good for you!
“A pint of the black stuff a day may work as well as a low dose aspirin to prevent heart clots that raise the risk of heart attacks.
“Drinking lager does not yield the same benefits, experts from University of Wisconsin told a [...]
I think I’m going to get a personalized urn for after I’m cremated.
“Personal urns are a new and exciting way to memorialize your loved one.
“Now we can create a custom urn in the image of your loved one or favorite Celebrity.
“New advances in facial reconstruction and 3D printing have made it possible to have an [...]
A pretend 1954 Ghost Busters trailer with Bob Hope, Dean Martin & Jerry Lewis, and Fred MacMurray composed via mash-up.
“This is a fake, independent, non-profit trailer. It is not endorsed or connected to Columbia Pictures or Sony. It was made as a purely technical exercise and for laughs.”
This Reuters piece reporting a London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine study misses the point. The LSH&TM concludes that there is no health benefit to eating organic foods.
I’m not sure I’ve ever heard anyone make the argument that we should eat organic foods because they’re healthier, though I’m certainly not an expert, and don’t [...]
Huh? I had no idea.
Time Magazine reports that “the Sunshine State is now the country’s leader in indoor marijuana cultivation.” Not only that, but “the marijuana grown this way is … some of the highest level of highs [THC] on the market.”
“Among the best tipsters, they say, are electricians paid big money by growers [...]
It only makes sense that if you contribute money to a politician’s campaign that they should send a little earmark pork your way. Right? It does if you’re Florida Congressman C. W. Bill Young.
Pennsylvania’s Democratic Congressman John Murtha has received a lot of national attention because of his shady earmark practices, and rightly so, but [...]
(JBisMe is an occasional guest contributor to Re/Creating Tampa. Here she recounts her recent visit to see the American Idol stars in concert.)
On account of my fascination with Adam Lambert, I did something very uncharacteristic for me: I attended the American Idol concert last night at the St. Pete Times Forum.
My good friends JG and [...]
O’Reilly loses another round in his war against facts, evidence, and reality.
As Andrew Sullivan notes:
“The issue O’Reilly has with Holland is that, compared with the US in many respects, it values individual liberty.”
(This clip is from December 2008. Not exactly breaking news, but still a nice example of the Internet’s ability to be used as [...]
Lou Dobb calls Rachel Maddow a “tea-bagging queen.” Maddow responds.

“In the meantime we’re all left to sort out the deeply confusing nature of what it means to be called a [...]
Women’s rights are perhaps THE most important issue facing global liberalism, and here’s a perfect example. In Sudan Lubna Hussein is facing a possible penalty of forty lashes for wearing pants in public. In a profound act of courage Ms. Hussein appeared at her court appearance wearing the same green trousers that got her in [...]
Connie Mack continues to make inaccurate comments about the coup in Honduras.
In a letter opposing the State Department’s revocation of visas for several Honduran officials, Mack writes –
“Why is the Obama Administration punishing them for following their constitution and the rule of law?”
The coup did not follow the constitution and the rule of law. [...]
A lot of great talks at OSCON ’09, like this one by Gunnar Hellekson of Red Hat Government. Hellekson was there promoting Open Source for America.
Biden and Holder announce today $1 billion in grant money to hire new cops.
“The money will come from the $787 billion economic stimulus package and will go to 1,046 law enforcement agencies from all 50 states, providing the salaries and benefits for three years.
“Agencies will be required to foot the bill for the officers for [...]
Connie Mack’s argument – The removal of President Zelaya adhered to the rule of law. The Honduran courts ruled Zelaya’s actions illegal, the Supreme Court voted to have him removed, and the Honduran Congress overwhelmingly concurred. The ruling party did not change, and the government has not been abolished. To call this a military coup [...]
Kendrick Meek‘s political campaign announces today that they will receive the endorsement of Steve Schale.
Schale is a keen political strategist who has helped Florida Democrats win House seats, and Schale was the state director for Obama’s successful Florida campaign. Presumably Schale will be working with many of the Florida Democrats in the 2010 races, [...]
Fox REPORTS that the nation of Iraq is now named Egypt. You DECIDE if the people working for FOX are drooling imbeciles.

There are actually things about Conyers I like, but this is the second time today he’s annoyed me.
This from the Sunlight Foundation -
“I love these members, they get up and say, ‘Read the bill,’” said Rep. John Conyers. “What good is reading the bill if it’s a thousand pages and you don’t have two [...]
St. Petersblog 2.0 offers some tips to the St. Petersburg Times’ Tampabay.com on how to improve their social media chops.
I think he hit the major points exactly. Sports, classifieds, and comments. He’s also concerned with the relationship between journalists and bloggers, which concerns me less. The comments, however, are one of my pet peeves. [...]
If your tax dollars pay for research, you should have access to that information (as long as it doesn’t endanger national security).
Sounds reasonable?
Not according to Robert Wexler. Wexler is co-sponsor to the Orwellian-named Fair Copyright in Research Works Act (HR 801). The Fair Copyright in Research Works Act restricts federal agencies from sharing research [...]
I came across the following passage while reading this morning, and thought it nicely captured how the war on terror and the “culture wars” are confluent. Feminism, in its meaning of women being accorded equal citizenship rights with men (i.e. able to own property, vote, hold office, work, chose their own healthcare, dress as they [...]
I guess Netflix shipments and Amazon packages aren’t enough for the post office. At this rate how long before stamps are a dollar each?
So long, snail shells
“Combine the impact of new technologies with the gut punch of the recession, and in the past year alone, the Postal Service has seen the single largest drop-off in [...]
I’m not sure why, but I’ve been touched with a spell of the blues. I have a million things to do, but the thought of turning my hand to any new task fills me with weariness.
To help me through the day I’ve turned to the inestimable Eddie Cochran.
Eddie Cochran died in a car wreck [...]
Digby does a terrific job of getting to the problem at the core of Professor Gates’ recent arrest. The problem isn’t that he was profiled. The problem is we live in a world where cops cannot be criticized.
“Indeed, it is very little different than exercising your right of free speech to tell a gang of [...]
The Billy Bragg/Wilco version
This machine kills facists.
I’m gonna tell you fascists
You may be surprised
The people in this world
Are getting organized
You’re bound to lose
You fascists bound to lose
Race hatred cannot stop us
This one thing we know
Your poll tax and Jim Crow
And greed has got to go
You’re bound to lose
You fascists bound to lose.
All of you fascists [...]
I spent the morning reading Frédéric Bastiat’s “The Law,” (it is the concluding essay in a collection you can find here titled Essays on Political Economy).
I dig 19th-century essays about political economy as much as the next policy geek, but reading this essay made me super sad.
Bastiat, apparently, is part of the intellectual arsenal of [...]
