Congratulations to all the Florida Netroots winners!

Special mention needs to be given to Kenneth Quinnell for all of his work on behalf of Florida progressives. Thanks, Kenneth!

And, thanks also to everyone on this list, everyone who was nominated, everyone who helped KQ, and everyone who has been working to advance progressive causes in Florida. Some [...]

Here is something I will never understand

Why does anyone think Crist would caucus with the Democrats?

“One thing we asked on the poll was whether people thought Charlie Crist should caucus with the Democrats or Republicans if he was elected. 43% of respondents said he should go with the Democrats and 37% with the Republicans.

“Perhaps more interesting was what those planning to [...]

David Byrne sues Charlie Crist

Didn’t this happen a lot during the last election season? A lot of Republicans, including John McCain, stole songs to use in their campaigns and were sued by the artists? Heart asked Palin to stop using the song “Barracuda.” Van Halen, Jackson Browne, and John Mellencamp threatened suits if McCain/Palin didn’t stop stealing their music [...]

Politics Monday - Civics, Spin, and Government Expansion

I have three topics for this week’s Politics Monday.

First, civic education in Florida.

Even Florida Republicans sometimes advocate liberal values. Charles McBurney, R-Jacksonville, sponsored the “Justice Sandra Day O’Connor Civics Education Act,” which requires middle school students to be tested on civic knowledge. The bill passed both houses unanimously. Civic education has been a cornerstone of [...]

Does the Florida Republican Party have corruption problem?

John Thrasher, the new head of the Republican Party of Florida (RPOF), sent a memo to RPOF members clarifying that any support of Governor Charlie Crist (should he decide to run as an independent) would violate their loyalty oath.

Crist Speculation

I suppose one of the most fun political games going right now is speculating on the future of Governor Charlie Crist. Here’s a speculative scenario by Mike Thomas I’d like to see.

“Charlie calls for a special session on corruption, targeting Republican abuse of party funds. This puts Republican legislative leaders in the very awkward position [...]

Crist Vetoes SB6

Crist vetoes SB6. I’m actually somewhat surprised. I assumed he’d sign it to shore up support with his Republican base.

“I veto SB6 because this bill is contrary to my firmly held principle to act in the best interests in the people of Florida,” said the governor, speaking to a packed room of reporters. The [...]

SansomWatch – Ray Sansom charged with grand theft

When Sansom’s indictment was dismissed by a judge I thought the story was over. Kudos to State Attorney Willie Meggs for persisting in his pursuit of justice and charging Ray Sansom, Jay Odum, & Bob Richburg with grand theft.

“In a surprise escalation of the case against ousted House Speaker Ray Sansom, a state prosecutor [...]

A Case for Dockery

Billy Townsend at Metro I4 News, generally of liberal sensibilities, makes a case for Sen. Paula Dockery, R-Lakeland for the Governor of Florida. Some good political analysis.

Ros-Lehtinen Silent on Honduras Since Her Return

Congresswoman Ros-Lehtinen hasn’t had anything to say about Honduras since her visit earlier this month. Perhaps she realizes how wrong she was, but thinks she’ll look weak if she admits it. Maybe?

Look, the Honduran constitution specifically states that citizens cannot be exiled. Zelaya was exiled. If he committed a crime he should have been [...]

There is zero debate that what happened in Honduras was an illegal coup

The Honduran constitution specifically forbids exiling Honduran citizens. The military shoved Zelaya out of the country. This is clearly unconstitutional.

The rule of law demands that Zelaya be allowed to face his accusers in a court. Zelaya was never given this opportunity.

So, conservative America (and Florida Rep. Ros-Lehtinen), exactly what part of this criminal scenario do [...]

Pledge of Barack Allegiance

You may think it’s ridiculous that some people don’t want their children watching Barack Obama’s stay-in-school message. But, what the liberal media won’t tell you is that along with Obama’s socialist indoctrination, there will also be a new pledge unveiled which will become mandatory for all children.

“I pledge allegiance to Barack Obama, the supreme leader [...]

Lou Holtz won’t run for Florida congressional seat

There is some speculation that 72-year old ex-football coach Lou Holtz will run for Suzanne Kosmas’s seat. Here’s my speculation – he won’t run.

A Holtz candidacy would create the easiest campaign Kosmas could imagine. She’d just have to keep running this gem Holtz gave the world last year – “Hitler was a great leader.”
