Maribel, you're exactly right. And given the wonderful Cuban and Spanish culture and history we have here in Tampa, and in Florida, it should be automatic that civic education is provided in Spanish as well as English.

Thanks, Charles. The 100,000 Garages project points to several fabbers in the Florida area (though none in the Tampa area). Someday I might have to take a road trip and see how something like that actually works.

I bumped into one of the folks who put on the TEDxTampaBay event and told her about this post. I think I put it into her brain that west central Florida might be ready for a Makers Faire.

If you come across any maker-related stuff, or have some suggestions about maker culture items I should post, please, send them along!

Dave,
I really enjoyed this. It's funny because as I was reading it, I thought about the 100,000 garages program and then you blogged about it a few days later. I love the idea of using rapid prototyping technology for custom furniture and solving problems. Maybe I could pay for it with all those little trips to Home Depot for a certain sized screw or bolt. One of my favorite furniture pieces is the "bird bone" coffee table. It is a beautiful piece using 3D models and calculations from nature.
Thanks for the great post.

Thanks Charles, I'll check that out. Have you seen this video about getting strangers to carry this fellow across NYC?

"Comedian Mark Malkoff sets out to disprove the myth that New York is unfriendly by attempting to transport himself from the southern most end of Manhattan as far north possible only by having people on the street physically carry him along the way."

All this fridge talk reminded me of a somewhat intriguing study a comedian did in Ireland chronicled in a book called Round Ireland with a Fridge. It's pretty funny, but also insightful as he attempted to see if people would give him a ride even if he was rolling a small "minibar" sized fridge as his companion. It was a testament to the curiosity and kindness of the Irish people but also pretty hilarious. Anyway, thanks for the story and getting me thinking about what's in my fridge - no flags, but lots of white wine I can't seem to toss from guests that don't know we don't drink white wine...
