I don’t get it. Everyone told me I had to try Mel’s Hot Dogs. Delicious! they said. And so, last week I found myself on Busch Boulevard around lunchtime and drove over to Mel’s.
I had a chili dog basket. It was a perfectly adequate dog, but I’m not sure why this restaurant gets all the hype.
However, I will return to Mel’s. Next time I’ll try a Chicago dog, or a Mel’s Special, or a Rueben, or a Mighty Mel. And, I’ll also try a burger there at some point, since I’m always on the look out for excellent burgers.
Since Mel’s only takes cash it might be awhile before I find myself again in the happy circumstance of being on Busch around lunch time with cash in my pocket.

Chicago, Slaw and Reuben are probably the best dogs there.
But it’s not just the dogs. It’s the absurdly efficient service, the atmosphere (not sure if it’s still up, but they put up a picture of a time when a truck ran into the building in the very booth where it happened), Mel’s wacky service (which will be inevitably more friendly if you’re young and female), etc.
But the dogs are darn good.
Fair enough. Next time it will be a Chicago w/ the works.
