New Year’s Eve Round-up
Cilantro Indian Cuisine
We made it to Cilantro Indian Cuisine on 56th street tonight. For a first visit it was everything I could have wanted in a new Indian restaurant. We started with a samosa, which was wonderful, made even tastier with the spicy curry. JB had the Vegetable Malai Kofta, and I had the Tandoori Mixed Grill. [...]
Key Lime Pie For Christmas
Every year, my in-laws pack up their gigantic RV and head down to Florida for the Holidays. I feel like I won the in-law lottery when it comes to my hubby’s folks. I genuinely enjoy their company. Because I love my in-laws so much, I like to spoil them with their favorite foods. One such [...]

Soft Hands & A Pleasant Kitty
Along with the Personal Chef thing, my Super Cutie and I moonlight as food stylists. I see all of those puzzling faces out there. Allow me to explain.
A food stylist is the person behind the scenes at every camera shoot, whether it is for print or for TV, which makes the food look pretty. [...]
Sunday Night Round-up
Lucy D. Jones at My Florida History points to the 1995 Columbia Restaurant Spanish Cookbook about “Florida’s oldest restaurant” by Adela Hernandez Gonzmart and Ferdie Pacheco. The Columbia is in Ybor City. Lucy also points to this 2002 release of Bern’s Steak House: Reflections & Recipes from a Remarkable Restaurant by Joyce LaFray. A couple [...]
Umami – The Fifth Taste
The Wall Street Journal ran an article about umami last Saturday.
“Americans are taught from an early age that there are four basic tastes — sweet, salty, sour and bitter. But what describes the taste of chicken soup?
To an increasing number of chefs and food-industry insiders, the answer is “umami,” dubbed “the fifth taste.” First identified [...]
Monday Round-up
Tampa I Am passes along some rumors about a new club in Ybor, and eats at Tampa Bay Brewing Company.
***Brian Ries points to this morbid page of Texas death row prisoner last meals. The page was pulled years ago, but thanks to the wonders of the internet it remains archived.

Tampa Filk
DB Cooper says the Tranquilo Coffee House at 10024 N. 30th Street “in Pointsettia Plaza” has filk-singing(!) “pretty much every Wednesday from about 6:30 to about 10:30 p.m.”
If you don’t know about filk music, start with this Wikipedia entry.
Apparently they also occasionally have bluegrass shows.
Absinthe Minded
My bottle of Lucid absinthe arrived via UPS the day before Thanksgiving.
Early in November the topic of absinthe came up while some friends and I sat around drinking beers. It took us only a few minutes to exhaust our knowledge of this elixir of nineteenth-century bohemian life. We weren’t even clear if it was illegal [...]

gnatv.com- Eating my backyard March 14, 2010Spring is arriving shortly and I have lots of plans for my backyard garden. Ever since we attempted a garden show, or at least a how too on the basics, I've been fooling around in my back yard with different plants and techniques for growing edibles and what have you. I found out that winter is a good time in Florida to grow all sorts of yummy stuffs, m […]Grayson

- Liquor Store Diary: Tip Cup January 28, 2010There is a tip cup that sits near the debit keypad. When I was being trained, I asked why a clerk would need a tip cup. The girl training me said that she thought it was crazy too. When she took it away, people asked where the tip cup was. I usually end up spending my tip on soda and food during my shift anyways. lsd2-p1.jpg read more […]Chris
- Liquor Store Diary: You Are Not As Smooth As You Think You Are, Drunkie January 27, 2010Some of you motherfuckers out there think you are witty, clever, suave and other awesome things when you are drunk. You are not. The server is not impressed by the pick up line you just yelled at her, the bar backs are not impressed by your ability to bump into things and not feel pain until tomorrow, and the liquor store clerk is annoyed that you can't […]Chris
- Liquor Store Diary: Can You Spot Me? January 25, 2010Sometimes people come in to the liquor store and want to buy something they don't have money for. "Hey bro, I'm short ten cents for that blunt. Can you spot me?" "No." "Oh ok." lsd2-p_1.jpg read more […]Chris
