Michael thinks I’ve gone about this burger comparison all wrong. My initial strategy was to compare the same burger at every establishment, just a regular burger, no cheese, cooked medium. Michael argued that I should try the signature burger at each establishment. Try the one they’re most proud of. Considering the difficulty of finding a regular burger at every restaurant I now see the wisdom of his strategy. Some places, like Acropolis, don’t even have a “regular” version on their menu. (Hmmm, actually while looking at their online menu I see an “American” burger offered which I didn’t notice while ordering).
That being said the Burger at Acropolis was the second best burger I’ve had in Tampa (the first still being GrillSmith).
Acropolis has a webpage here (but check your volume if you’re at work since it will start playing some traditional music immediately)(BTW, Acropolis, if you’re reading this, ditch the crummy webpage design).
I ordered the “Crete” burger which is described as a “seasoned char-grilled burger topped with Mediterranean cheese, onions, tomatoes and lettuce.”
The meat, of course, is what makes any burger shine, and Acropolis had the perfect meat/bun ration, and a delicious patty to boot. It was slightly on the medium-well, instead of medium, but some looking at that burger would see that as a quibble. It also could have been a little oozier for my taste. The lettuce served was a plate of baby greens rather than the traditional iceberg, or common variety romaine.
I also don’t have an image of this burger because when I went there for lunch I wasn’t expecting to order a burger. I’m glad I did.
