“A wild female Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphin was observed going through a series of complicated steps to prepare cuttlefish for eating in the Spencer Gulf, in South Australia.”

***

“The dolphin then lifted the body up and beat it with her nose to drain the toxic black ink that cuttlefish squirt into the water to defend themselves when attacked.”

“Next the prey was taken back to the seafloor, where the dolphin scraped it along the sand to strip out the cuttlebone, making the cuttlefish soft for eating.”

I am now an occasional blogger at Creative Loafing.

CL is expanding their food coverage and recruited some local folks to write about food for their Daily Loaf blog. Here’s a nice link list of the new food bloggy goodness.

As some of you know the company that owns Creative Loafing filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in September. Like every newspaper in the United States they’re trying to figure out how to make it in the 21st century information economy. And also like every newspaper in the US they’re working on pumping up their online presence.

It was nice for Brian Ries to reach out to local bloggers, and I want to thank him for the invitation. With any luck it will be a positive experience for everyone involved.

Also part of the new food crew are Taylor Eason, Leslie “The Hungry Housewife” Green, Bethany Sherwin, Jamie Ostrand, Brian Ries, and me, with a high chance of more to come. Here’s a link to my archive which currently holds THREE posts (one about cupcakes, one about a GAO report on genetic engineering, and one about the coming of CineBistro to Hyde Park).

The dream is to do different stuff there than I do here, but since school and work often interfere, there’s always the possibility that there’ll be some cross-posting on occasion.

As I started making my enchilada sauce, I decided that this is a good recipe to share. It is probably the most basic Mexican sauce. It’s also inexpensive, and is great with lots of Mexican dishes, canned sauce doesn’t compare.

You can double this recipe. Leftover sauce freezes well.

6 large dried red chilies

1 quart boiling water

7-10 peeled garlic cloves ( about 1/4 cup)

salt to taste

3 Tablespoons flour

Rinse the chilies in cold water and remove the stems. Cook in boiling water along with the garlic. Remove the chiles and garlic after about 15 minutes ( when tender). Place in a blender or food processor with some reserved liquid, I make it into a soupy paste. 1/2 to 1 cup of the liquid should do it. You may need to do this in batches. Whip the flour in towards the end. As the sauce cooks with your food it will thicken.

Enjoy!

I love Dave’s spidercakes site. It got me thinking about some things that I’ve done with food for Halloween. One of my personal favorites was making a punch with floating hands, and dry ice as a fog effect.

I made the hands by filling latex gloves with water, adding a little food color and freezing them. After they freeze, cut the glove away, quickly rinse with a little H2O (in case of a latex allergy), and float them!! Then add a little dry ice which you can buy at Winn Dixie, I’ve heard that Publix sells it too. Go to the service customer desk and ask for it.

At WD they keep it in some mysterious room……they needed keys and gloves to get it AHHHHHHH

Ciao Dahlings
