Idle Chatter: March 2, 2013

The future looks bright! This past week saw the end of my superbusytime at work, which means that things will get back to justordinarybusyness next week. I have some guests in from out of town until the middle of next week, but after that I expect the number of posts to tick back up.

I continue with my writing-as-a-hobby past-time. Chuck Wendig’s writing blog has been an inspiration. If you’re also working on your writing chops I recommend it highly. One of his flash fiction challenges is actually turning into a nice little story which I may post here in a few weeks when I finish it.

The next Stephen King Saturday post covers The Stand. Zoe had a lot to write about The Stand so there will be The Stand posts this week and next.

Tomorrow’s review (if I have time) will be Rachel Dratch’s Girl Walks Into a Bar. Those of you keeping track at home will recognize that I’m still not finished with Cloud Atlas. There’s a reason for that which has to do with the structure of the book. If and when I finish it I’ll write about what I think was a structural problem with the story. (Keeping in mind of course that I’m some amateur schlub kvetching about the work of someone who is regularly nominated for the Man Booker Prize.)

Did you know Steinbeck’s first published novel was about pirates? I had no idea, but as soon as I found out I checked it out of the library. Unfortunately, I got a drab library hardback, and not the provocative Popular Library paperback seen below.
