I needed cheese. Something a little bit fancy. I decided this would be a good time to hit the Old World Cheese Shop and check it out. I had noticed it on my trips to Cilantro’s and told myself that the next time I needed cheese I’d try it out. Guess what the Old World Cheese [...] I love Lupton’s Fat Man’s BBQ & Country Cooking. Lupton’s has been a Tampa institution for almost 40 years. Though I’d driven by it a few times, and idly noted that I should stop in some time, it really first came to my attention as I was writing the blurb for its win as Best Sweet [...] (Update – JB really likes it and drags me there occasionally for lunch.) If you like Chipotle-style burrito chains, then Qdoba is the place for you. If not, then not. The one I tried is at 5001A E. Fowler Avenue, near the MOSI. I’ve been driving by it for months and finally decided to stop in for lunch. It is an odd sort of restaurant. It is Dominican fare, rather than the Tex-Mex I was hoping for, and they had no menu. On my first visit I had a burger, which came thoroughly cooked, and slathered with mayo. My second meal was a breakfast burrito, which has the sort of flaky tortilla generally found in your low-end frozen burritos. And, it seems like I’ve been working late every night, so the only food I’ve been preparing are simple things like salads, or rice and beans, so I haven’t tried out any new recipes. Pho Quyen is a decent Vietnamese restaurant near [...] As I mentioned in a previous post I want to like Mel’s Hot Dogs I just wasn’t impressed with my first visit. In the comments Joel prompted me to try one of their specialty dogs, so yesterday afternoon I did just that. This time I tried the Mighty Mel. And so, last week I found myself on Busch Boulevard around lunchtime and drove over to Mel’s. I had a chili dog basket. It was a perfectly adequate dog, but I’m not sure why this restaurant gets all the [...] Maya’s is so authentic I had to break out my embarrassingly poor Spanish to order lunch. I ordered a chicken Torta, which is one of my indicators for an authentic Mexican food restaurant. My torta was delectable. I liked everything about Maya’s and think I need to try them out for breakfast someday. Maya’s is near [...] Matt at Florida Food Hound eats at Five Guys Famous Burgers and likes it. I had a Five Guys burger the other day and have to agree that they are tasty. Matt particularly liked the fresh, thick french fries. Personally, I prefer the thin and crispy kind of fries, but there’s no denying they come plentiful [...] I ate at Chipotle last week for lunch. The location I visited is near USF campus, next to, but not in, University Mall. It’s at 2576 E. Fowler and in the same shopping center as Demolition Comics.
